Thanks for taking the time to read/visit.

(Updated July 6, 2008)

It is not my intent to offend anyone, but the offenders.
(And there’s more than a few)
Some language is PG-13, but not as bad as some T-shirts seen in public

I would have settled for some honest justice but that’s not happened----so I will to the best of my ability practice a little honest literary vigilantism
By becoming a Vigilante Literary Committee of One

My preference would have been to have "ALL" my letters to the editor published in The Hawk Eye, but it’s not to be.

1. It would have been a much better timeline, than at present
2. It sure would have reached far more of the general public in the area that I wanted to reach.

3. This is very time consuming, and costly: my cheapness is only exceeded by my laziness.

Greeners Law: Never get in an argument with a man who buys ink by the barrel.
Shows the level of my brilliance, or should that be the lack thereof.

I do not question The Hawk Eye’s “RIGHT” to publish or not publish anything it so chooses. I can even understand/appreciate their Catch-22/quandary. I know from experience (both personal and empirical) that The Hawk Eye will take a hit(s), but seldom allow something negative about advertisers, or so called pillar(s) of the community.

Just wish they would be up front about it and drop the façade, hypocrisy, selectivity, quit touting the First Amendment “as it is practiced; it rings a bit shallow” IMO and replace and practiced it, with:

Cowardice asks the question - is it safe?
Expediency asks the question - is it politic?
Vanity asks the question - is it popular?
But conscience asks the question - is it right?
And there comes a time
when one must take a position that is
neither safe, nor politic, nor popular
but one must take it because it is right."
--- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Then these 2 items from The Hawk Eye, July 10, 2003
1. The opinions expressed in the letters have no bearing on whether they are selected for publication.
Comment: If you buy that, I have this bridge...
2. Our readers expect a newspaper that reports independently of government officials, special interest groups or advertisers.
Comment: Expect sort of , Believe no
There’s more I could cite by chapter and verse, but I believe you get my drift.

If a person wanted the truth to be known; they had better start their own newspaper [and that’s the reason for this website]. The only reason for a newspaper was to make a profit and if a story might harm their bottom line, they could ignore it. I’ve seen this in various permutations and writers (as I’m sure most of you have also) including a couple in The Hawk Eye one syndicated and one local (but can’t find at the present)

As a general rule, I like to reference all quotes, adages, etc., to the author/source if known to me.
SIDENOTE: All publication dates listed are from The Hawk Eye, unless noted otherwise, I have found that some of their online articles/archives can have a different date; (than the print edition). I have no idea of the prevalence of that practice.

Complete text of Mayor Tim Scott’s Apology From The Hawk Eye July 25, 2000

To the citizens of Burlington and the surrounding area: I apologize for the action I took on July 14, 2000.Removing the signs from Mr. Ronald Thornton’s vehicle was wrong. For this I apologize to Mr. Thornton and hope one day he can forgive me. I am embarrassed by what I have done. This was an action which is contrary to my own beliefs. I made a mistake. I cannot undo what’s been done and I will strive not to do anything of this nature again.

Sincerely, Mayor Tim Scott

As I over heard someone say: “Probably written by his lawyer to say just enough so he could keep his job as the Mayor”. I don’t know about that…But I do know for a fact his lies caused me to be arrested, handcuffed, fingerprinted, photographed and THROWN IN JAIL. Also, has cost me thousands, yes, thousands of dollars; and some still wonder why I’m not a happy camper.

How sincere was the belly-butting “I'M THE MAYOR OF BURLINGTON’S” apology, he has never said anything to me about it, or even send me a copy of it…So I will let you, the reader, decide about its veracity.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” –Martin Luther King

Dictators take power promising to help the people but soon are only helping themselves. There’s a bit of the dictator even among elected officials who use their powers for their own interests. (Emphasis added)

Maybe the best system is to keep turning our officials over before they turn on you. Too long in power allows too many opportunities for corruption.—“Plato” from beetle bailey by Mort Walker

From The Hawk Eye Advertising Supplement, April 3, 2005---“Justice Isn’t Served Until Crime Victims Are”

Justice isn’t served until we realize, as a community and as a nation founded on the principles of “equal rights for all” that violence affects us all, and that victims’ rights represent the very foundation upon which our nation was created.

In Des Moines County, we can be “bystanders” to justice, or we can recognize that justice for one person who is hurt by crime is truly justice for all. If you or someone you know is a victim of crime, you can seek help.—Patrick C. Jackson, Des Moines County Attorney.

Comment: Yes, you certainly can seek help; till the cows come home, then go seek some more. Not opinion, personal experience.

Mission Statement: It is the mission of the Des Moines County Attorney's Office to...

"Respond to the needs and concerns of its citizens by always striving to find the truth, to seek justice, and to provide quality criminal prosecutions, victim/witness services…

Yessiree Bob that’s the way it is in Des Moines County (I wished) or what an absolute crock.

Disclaimer: I’m not an architect or structural engineer; but I wonder if the weight of all that BS at the Public Safety Building is what’s causing the floor(s) to sag and the wall(s) to bow.

There will be a little more about Jackson and Scott in future posts. (understatement)
